I just thought I would put up some pics from my parents house in Gary, SD. I took them when we were back in Nov. It is more for those who have never ventured west.

Don Quixote :: Thursday, January 15th 2009
I finally finished Don Quixote!

Don Quixote

Oh, what can I say about a book that was so dang long. Well, first off it is actually two books. The first was written in 1605, the second was written in 1615. This review will not ruin endings <g>.

Lets start with the first one.

Don Quixote is a retired guy in his 50s named Alonso. He likes to read and decides that all of his fantastical "knight errant" books are real, and sets off to become one himself, righting wrongs and saving damsels. He finds a fool in his village named Sancho Panza to become his squire and uses his broken down horse, now dubbed "Rocinante" (which is now going to be the name of my next truck by the way) to accomplish his goals. Along the way he has his run-ins with windmills and inns thought to be castles.

The first half was written as a "true history" translated by our narrator from an Arabic author. That made the narrative a bit different than I am used to. Also, it got a bit old about 3/4 the way through... yeah, I get it... he's nuts. It picked up at the end though.

And on to the second one.

Don Quixote and his squire want to go on a second quest. This one is full of a lot meaner people who constantly play tricks on them. Also, it is much more engaging. Another strange thing that happened is that there was a "false Quixote" by another author (not Cervantes) that was published between the first and second books. The strange thing is that Don Quixote and Sancho find out about the first "history" and this "false" history on their travels. The "false" Quixote book becomes the butt of a few jokes (including one Cervantes was reaching for). It even goes so far as to have them meet a character from the "false" history and have him swear to a magistrate that he was hanging out with the "wrong" Don Quixote and Sancho.

Anyway, that is beside the point. The ending was more than satisfactory and I really enjoyed the second part. Just wish it didn't take me so long to read it <g>

8.5 / 10

Antwerpen :: Wednesday, December 10th 2008
I walked to the train this morning and went to Antwerpen. It is a beautiful city, with lots of shops. I saw the Cathedral and the house of Reuben. I had a healthy diet of chocolate and maszapaan, which is almonds crushed and mixed with sugar to form a paste then formed into shapes. It kinda tastes like sugar cookie dough. Every morning Troy and I start the day with a full complimentary breakfast at the hotel. We have smoked salmon, turkey, ham, eggs, cereal, fruit and various breads. I will post pictures tonight. It is now Wednesday night here. I am going to go meet Troy at his work then we will go to dinner.
